Mrs. Liberko

December 13, 2008

Spelling and Vocabulary - Please see the spelling link for spelling and vocabulary words.  The test will be on Friday.

Reading - The students will continue to read non-fiction text this week to learn more about space.  We will also view some videos to gain more space knowledge.

Writing - During our writing time this week the students will be writing and designing a postcard.  I will share a book titled, Postcards From Pluto.  The children will then choose a planet that they want to learn more about.  I will have books for them to use to research the planet chosen.  Each child will then be asked to design a postcard showing what they learned.

Science - The students started work on their robots last week.  The work will continue this week.  They are working in teams of three to put a Lego robot together.  When the robot is finished, they will use a computer program to program their robot to maneuver through a space coarse.

HOMEWORK - On Monday the children will be bringing a chart home to make moon observations for our science unit.  Please help with the observation each night and the recording.  The paper is due back on FRIDAY.

Please remind your child to bring their reading homework and study guide everyday.

Please mark you calendars for our tentative date for the science fair.

January 29th 5:00-6:00

We have an elf in the classroom.  Julia has asked for help collecting gently used stuffed animals for the Ronald McDonald House.  If you can help, send a stuffed animal for our box.  Thank you

Christmas Season Note

Every year I write to the parents of my students with a special request.  On January 6, 1996 while I was student teaching at Children's Home Society, my family suffered a horrible loss.  Our eight year old son, Dennis, passed away very unexpectedly.  The holiday season continues to be difficult for me and my family, but each year we know how blessed we are in so many other ways.

Because I was student teaching at the time, and I needed something to keep me going, I went back to CHS (Children's Home Society) to finish my teaching assignment.  Many of the children at CHS have experienced suffering in their young lives, suffering that would appear to make them incapable of going on in life.  The children and staff at CHS instead reached out to me and comforted me.  I have never forgotten how kind they were.

I have everything I need in my life and I know that the children at CHS do not.  I would like to ask that if you were planning on giving a gift to me this holiday that you instead send what you would spend on a gift as a donation to CHS in memory of Dennis Liberko.  Dennis loved Christmas and would love to share that joy with other children. If you choose to contribute, the address is;
